Livelihoods: helping people to earn a living
*
One in five of the world’s population - 1.2 billion people - lives in extreme poverty and as a result one in three children do not have enough to eat. Poor people work very hard to survive and yet it is very difficult for them to improve their lives. They may find it hard to gain regular, paid employment, as a result of their lack of education or training. The investment needed to improve the productivity of the land, to buy livestock or to set up in business is simply not available. Often people are not paid a fair price for the goods they produce. Disabled people face even greater barriers to earning a living. Islamic Aid is helping disadvantaged people to improve their livelihoods, establishing and supporting enterprises based on fair trade – helping people gain better rewards for their work.
