Poverty does not just exist in other countries. Statistics published
by the UK government show that a large number of Muslims in the UK are suffering
poverty and deprivation more than ever.
While the academic achievements of other ethnic groups have improved, Pakistani
and Bangladeshi students have continued to under perform – only 22% of boys
achieve five or more GCSEs as compared to up to 66% in other communities. These
groups have the highest unemployment rate – 23% remain unemployed as compared
to 5% whites. And more than 60% are living in low-income households, as compared
to 19% in the mainstream communities.
These statistics are worrying not just for UK Muslims but also for society as a
whole. Improving the lives of these communities would benefit everyone. Islamic
Aid seeks to tackle these issues by raising awareness of the problem, finding ways
and ultimately addressing the situation.
